TAMIL Language

There are approximately 78 million Tamil speakers in India. It is the second most spoken language in the country. Tamil is also spoken by significant populations in other countries.

Tamil is primarily spoken in the south of India in the state of Tamil Nadu. This state is one of the most advanced states in India with a high literacy rate. Unfortunately there are still over 15 million illiterate people. Among these illiterates are gypsie populations that travel thoughout India.

Hinduism dominates the state with 87% of the population. while Islam and Christianity each have about 6%. The remaining 1% are a mixture of other faiths.

Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu and hosts the largest Christian church in India. Chennai is said to be the place where the Apostle Thomas was matyred. There is a shrine on a hill overlooking Chennai in his honor.
